MORENA LERABA
Over the past nine years, Morena Leraba, born Teboho Mochaoa in the village of Matholeng, Lesotho, has gained global recognition for blending traditional Famo-inspired vocals with diverse musical genres. His debut album Fela sa Ha Mojela (2023) showcases this evolving sound, which is psychedelic and forward-looking. Leraba’s music tells stories of migration, labor, and life in Johannesburg, drawing from his own experiences and those of fellow Basotho workers. Collaborating with artists like Major Lazer and Damon Albarn, Leraba has also performed internationally, including at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and with Africa Express in London. Much of the mystique surrounding Morena Leraba stems from his roots in Lesotho, a mountainous country that is enclaved within South Africa. Growing up, he spent much of his youth as a shepherd (in the village of Matholeng, in Mafeteng), drawing inspiration from the solitude that tending animals brings. “If you’re from Lesotho, being a shepherd is common — more of a right of passage for most young boys from rural areas,” he says. “Growing up I was a shepherd in a village, but I also went to school [and received western education].” Still, the experience remains pivotal — being a herder, “solitude brings self-introspection, and that is necessary as a musician and poet. Shepherds develop a unique communication and connection with nature and animals.”
LA DAME
Everything La Dame plays is rich of drums, soulful inspiration and heat, but let’s say her main musical landscapes are sunny, polyglot and generous. She loves to play and produce what does not have a 4 to the floor rythm, what contains breaks, what grooves on a non-binary flow. La Dame explores music with insatiable enthusiasm and curiosity. Her eclectic way to approach music is her strength and speciality, combined with high-quality mixing skills. Respected locally and internationally everywhere she goes, this atypical personality has lived in several places around the world, she is a kindly polyglot. Famous for her eclectic global club offerings, as a producer she has released EP’s, remixes and tracks that illustrate this aim to smash the borders, for labels such as Blanc Manioc (FR), Wonderwheel Rec. (US), Yuku (CZ) and Banoffee Pies (UK) (among others), remixed artists like David Walters, Yeahman, Miguel Mallumbrosio, collaborated with Florian Pellissier, Cyril Atef, Deheb, Goldie B, etc.
