Known for her extensive work in amplifying African cinema and emerging voices, Nadia will talk in this presentation about her entry into a 20-year career as a film curator. She will expand on the role of the curator to bring about social change with reference to her BEYOND NOLLYWOOD initiative.

with Film Curator Nadia Denton
Nadia Denton was born and raised in London. She is a Curator, Public Speaker and Impact Producer. She grew up in a Jamaican household. Her father is the late black British Director Menelik Shabazz. She has worked in the film industry for over nearly two decades, has specialised in Nigerian Cinema since 2014 and coined the term BEYOND NOLLYWOOD to refer to art house, experimental, animation, documentary, shorts and music videos from Nigeria and its diaspora.
BEYOND NOLLYWOOD curated film programmes have toured internationally and been theatrically released at Picturehouse Cinemas in the UK (2024).
She is a public speaker and frequently lead industry talks, filmmaker Q&As as well as making academic presentations. This year so far she has presented at the Berlinale EFM inclusion Pathways Seminar, International Film Festival of Rotterdam and Third Horizon Film Festival Think Tank.
Her two books include The Black British Filmmakers Guide to Success (2011) and The Nigerian Filmmaker’s Guide to Success: Beyond Nollywood (2014). She has also written for BFI Sight and Sound.
Organisations she has collaborated with include the British Film Institute, British Council, June Givanni Pan-African Cinema Archive, BBC Arabic Film Festival and King’s College. She co-produced SHOOTING IT LIKE A WOMAN a BBC World Service radio documentary about women in Nigerian film industry.
In 2023, Nadia was appointed as an honorary Senior Research Fellow by the University of Exeter. She is a member of BAFTA and has been an official Victoria & Albert Museum African Heritage Guide since 2016.
